Cancun Enhances Security with 7 New Measures to Protect Tourists

Despite recent crime issues in Cancun, many people still feel safe in the destination. However, officials are committed to improving security in this popular tourist city. They are constantly launching various security operations to protect the millions of tourists who visit Cancun every year. Here are the seven new security measures announced to keep tourists safe:

1. Installing Security Cameras

Cancun officials have been working on installing security cameras, especially in busy tourist areas. They have installed 70 monitoring points, each equipped with four cameras for video surveillance.

2. C5 Connection

Cancun has installed hundreds of cameras throughout the city and connected them to the state’s C5 Security Complex. Mayor Ana Paty Peralta commented that they now have 70 new Intelligent Monitoring Points (PMI), each with four cameras, all coordinated with the Quintana Roo Security Complex (C5) to enhance city visibility. This helps deter crime and aids authorities in identifying, finding, and arresting criminals.

3. Technological Updates

Cancun has been updating its technology to ensure it remains effective. The C2 Command and Control Center, responsible for video surveillance in Cancun, received new technological equipment to aid in operations.

4. Using Drones

A significant advancement in Cancun’s efforts to keep tourists and citizens safe is the use of drones. These drones can stay in flight for about 40 minutes and are equipped with night vision. They can be used to search for and locate criminals before they escape the area and to locate crime victims.

5. Police Training

Cancun is strengthening its police force with more training by internal C2 departments, including the Police Analysis and Intelligence departments and the Intelligence and Command departments. The goal is to build the best police force Cancun has ever had.

6. New and Updated Equipment

In addition to ongoing training, Cancun is improving its police force and overall security by providing new and updated equipment. New vehicles and electronic tablets have been provided to the police, and the C2 received new computers to monitor the police, cameras, and drones.

7. Increased Patrolling

Cancun has launched an increased patrolling campaign. Several security organizations regularly patrol popular tourist areas, but additional personnel have been added, particularly in the Hotel Zone. A total of 60 Navy and Tourist Police personnel have been deployed to deter extortion and drug sales. They will be stationed every mile and a half along the Hotel Zone, the busiest tourist area in Cancun.
