Portuguese tourists disappear in San Cristobal de las Casas while on vacation

Goncalo Alfaro Pereira Dos Santos e Cruz and Dinis Pedro Dos Santos Rodrigues, two tourists of Portuguese origin, were reported missing in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas.

This happened after the night of Friday, November 8, was the last time they had communication via WhatsApp with their families.

The tourists had arrived in the city to visit several places in the state, but due to the lack of communication, the family filed a complaint.

“On November 8, 2024, at approximately 10:28 p.m., was the last time CC Goncalo Alfaro Pereira Dos Santos e Cruz and Dinis Pedro Dos Santos Rodrigues, who were in the municipality of San Cristóbal de las Casas, had communication via WhatsApp, and the whereabouts of both are unknown to date,” according to the search form.

The document issued by the Chiapas Prosecutor’s Office indicates that Goncalo Alfaro Pereira Dos Santos, 39 years old, is 1.74 meters tall and of medium build. He also has short black hair, brown eyes and a scar near his right eye.

While Dinis Pedro Dos Santos Rodrigues, 40 years old, is described as having white skin, thin build and 1.75 meters tall. In addition, he has short graying hair, green eyes, a medium mouth and a tattoo on his right arm.

In his absence, the Prosecutor’s Office against Forced Disappearance of Persons and Disappearances Committed by Individuals asked to contact the following telephone numbers: (961) 61 7 23 00 (extension 17541), 800 220 20 11 or 961 655 03 24 (for WhatsApp) in case of having information about his whereabouts.

The Mexican Institute of Human Rights and Democracy reported that as of May 16, there were 1,192 reports of missing persons.

Tapachula concentrates the largest number of cases of disappearances, displacing Tuxtla as the municipality with the most cases. This went from 132 to 166 reports.

In the other municipalities, the cases increased and Palenque moved to fifth place instead of San Cristóbal de las Casas.

It detailed that 281 people were under 18 years old when they were disappeared, the majority being girls, exactly 59.79 percent.

43.67 percent of the cases of missing and unlocated women are in the age range between 10 and 19 years old.

He indicated that in general, 47.73 percent of the cases of missing and unlocated persons are in the age range between 15 and 34 years.
