Avianca has launched two new routes from its Bogotá hub to Monterrey, Mexico, and Belém, Brazil. Both routes are operated with Airbus A320 aircraft, with a capacity of 180 passengers. David Alemán, Avianca’s Sales Director for Colombia and South America, stated that the route to Tulum Airport will not operate, even during peak season. He also emphasized the importance of the Brazilian market for the airline.
“Monterrey connects another of our destinations in Mexico, besides Mexico City, and we expect to have more routes operating to Mexico soon. We began operations to Tulum for a few months, but we didn’t have the necessary traffic to continue the route, and we don’t plan to resume it at the moment, even during peak seasons.”
He explained that the Brazilian market is key to the airline’s planned expansion. “For us, Brazil is a strategic market, and just as we operate flights to Manaus, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo, Belém is an important entry point to Brazil from the Amazon. It’s a significant market, especially for markets we serve, such as the Caribbean, North America, and Europe, because we have many passengers from there who are currently looking for flight options to Europe. These are markets we aim to develop; furthermore, Belém will host COP30 this year, which naturally opens up a much wider range of opportunities,” Alemán told this newspaper.
The Bogotá-Monterrey route offers four flights with more than 1,400 seats per week. Meanwhile, the Belém-Bogotá route has three flights and more than 1,000 seats per week, connecting the capital of the state of Pará with Colombia for the first time.
For his part, Frederico Pedreira, CEO of Avianca, stated that “the launch of these two new operations reflects our commitment to strengthening air connectivity in Latin America. With Monterrey, we reinforce our presence in the Mexican market, while opening a new route between Colombia and northern Brazil with our service to Belém. We continue working to connect people, cultures, and business opportunities throughout the region with an increasingly robust and efficient network.”
Avianca is investing over $800 million this year to strengthen its fleet with six aircraft by the end of 2025, in addition to improving the customer experience and consolidating its growth. (Avianca adds 6 aircraft by year’s end to launch 13 new routes).
“This investment of more than USD 800 million demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the customer and to Colombia. Our model works by offering competitive options and an expanding premium experience. That is why we are actively investing in more aircraft, an unprecedented route network, and, fundamentally, in the quality of the travel experience,” Pedreira said at the time.
