Chihuahua government urges migrants to leave the state

“Chihuahua is not a sanctuary for them (migrants),” and those seeking to reach the United States should avoid traveling to this state, Governor María Eugenia Campos Galván declared, in response to the closure of border crossings and the suspension of U.S. government assistance programs.

“We ask them to reconsider and recognize the situation facing the border with the United States,” the governor, a member of the National Action Party (PAN), stated at a press conference.

She explained that the cancellation of the CBP One program has further complicated transit to the neighboring country. She also acknowledged that since Washington tightened immigration measures, the number of people stranded in border cities like Ciudad Juárez has increased.

It is worth noting that these statements come after an accident in which a semi-trailer overturned while en route to Ciudad Juárez, resulting in the deaths of six migrants and injuries to two others.

Furthermore, he acknowledged that the state faces limitations in infrastructure and resources to assist thousands of migrants, though he assured that his government would collaborate if humanitarian aid were requested.

Meanwhile, pro-migrant groups criticized the official stance, arguing that it criminalizes those seeking safety or better living conditions, while state authorities insist on discouraging mass arrivals until adequate conditions exist to address their needs.
