The 2025 Sea Turtle Festival kicked off yesterday in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, with the participation of public and private institutions dedicated to the protection and conservation of this species. During the festival, they are conducting recreational activities for elementary and high school students.
Over the three days of the festival, students participate in the release of baby sea turtles, the central and most popular activity, as children have the opportunity to help the hatchlings reach the sea.
This year’s festival is being held at the Azul Ixtapa Hotel Convention Center in Hotel Zone II of Ixtapa, where more than 1,500 people, including children and adults, are expected to attend over the three days.
In addition, participating institutions are offering talks and workshops for students and other attendees to raise awareness about the importance of sea turtle conservation, their life cycle, and the challenges they face. During the festival, children are shown how to plant artificial nests and remove nests, allowing them to participate in the process of relocating and protecting turtle eggs at turtle camps.
The festival includes cultural events, music, and environmental contests to complement the educational component. Visits are also organized to local camps, such as Ayotlcalli on Blanca Beach, so that participating children and teenagers can learn firsthand about turtle conservation efforts.
