President Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted that currently the Mexico-Queretato highway is “full, saturated” and that it cannot be expanded
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that the Mexico-Querétaro passenger train project “is advanced” and ruled out using expropriations as he recalled that the State has the right of way to carry out the railway project.
Yesterday, Friday, when meeting with the press during the inaugural route of the first section of the Mayan Train that runs from Campeche-Cancún, the head of the federal Executive highlighted that currently the Mexico-Querétaro highway is “full, saturated” and that it cannot be expanded.
He highlighted that in addition to being cheaper, electric trains for passenger service do not pollute.
“How is the Querétaro-Mexico City highway? Full, saturated, it can no longer be expanded, only upwards – viaduct -, but if you have the train tracks, why not (promote) passenger trains? Furthermore, this does not pollute (…) How much fuel and pollution are saved?”
“How advanced is the Mexico-Querétaro project?” he was asked.
“It is advanced, but the important thing is that we have the right of way. In the concessions that were granted at that time, it was established that if the State required passenger trains to use the tracks, it could do so. I don’t know how they got that, I discovered it.”
“Then it is not about expropriating: in the concession they were granted there is a clause for what I am saying. It’s just ‘let’s see if we need passenger trains’, because it’s also cheaper, they don’t pollute,” he responded.
