An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 on the Richter scale was recorded this morning in the state of Chiapas, according to the National Seismological Service (SMN). However, the seismic alert did not sound because, apparently, there are no sensors in the place.
The SMN detailed that the earthquake had its epicenter 319 kilometers southeast of Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, with a depth of 10 kilometers.
The disaster occurred at 07:53 hours on Tuesday and could be felt more intensely in El Salvador, but very slightly in Mexico City (CDMX), where the activation of the seismic alert was not required.
Local media detailed that the seismic alert was not issued, because, allegedly, there are no sensors in the area where it occurred.
Earthquake in Chiapas worries El Salvador
Although the earthquake had its epicenter in Ciudad Hidalgo de Chiapas, state authorities confirmed that the movement was barely perceptible, however, the alerts were triggered in El Salvador.
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) of El Salvador confirmed that the epicenter of the earthquake was off the coast of Sonsonate, 72.0 km south of Los Cóbanos beach.
However, the Ministry of Environment of El Salvador reported that, given the magnitude of 5.7, “there is no tsunami threat for El Salvador”, as they indicated in a press release.
Meanwhile, according to the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Invisumeh) of Guatemala, the earthquake was also felt in Escuintla, Jutiapa, Cuilapa.
Also, at 8:10 am on Tuesday, the MARN reported a second earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4, off the coast of Sonsonate, 67 km south of Los Cóbanos beach.
