As part of a world tour of tennis tournaments that will span Europe, Asia, Australia, the United States, Canada, Mexico and South America, the Gay Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA), a global tennis association with over 20,000 members, will host Coconutz Puerto Vallarta 2024 in Puerto Vallarta. The tournament will have singles, doubles and categories, with Open being the top level, followed by A, B and C for high, intermediate and low levels respectively.
The tournament will be held from March 14 to 17 at Parota Park and entry will be free. Games will run from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm from Thursday to Saturday and from 10:00 am on Sunday for the grand finale. The winners and runners-up in each category will receive art trophies crafted by one of the most prominent indigenous communities in the area. The tournament will also include a reception to brief the participants on the championship details and a closing party with a Mexican flair on the terrace of the Grand Miramar hotel, where the stunning views of the bay will cap off the visit of the competitors.
This first edition will feature 130 players from different countries, such as American, Canadian, Australian, Filipino, German, Armenian, English, Irish, Dutch, South African, Costa Rican, Puerto Rican, Jamaican, Malaysian, Indian, Peruvian and, of course, Mexican. The GLTA, although its acronym only refers to the gay and lesbian community, fosters inclusion, so the invitation is open to the whole LGBTQ+ community, as well as heterosexuals who want to join. The tournament is not professional, but many members have a high level of skill, so a high quality of play is anticipated. The event will be in a 100% family and sports atmosphere, with food and drinks available for purchase for attendees.
Rodrigo Velázquez Mendiolea, the tournament director, said: “This is the first official GLTA tournament in Mexico. This is a globally recognized tennis organization in the community, which will generate economic benefits for Puerto Vallarta through flights, accommodation, food consumption and local transportation for the players and their supporters.”
With this first edition of the Coconutz Tournament, Puerto Vallarta establishes itself as the leading beach destination for hosting sports events and for the LGBTQ+ community at the national level and one of the main ones at the international level.
The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust, with the backing of the State Government and the municipal authorities, will keep promoting and supporting that all sectors of the population and those who visit us have spaces and activities for their healthy entertainment and leisure.
