How many foreigners live in Mexico?
Based on the expanded questionnaire of the 2020 Population and Housing Census, people residing in Mexico born in another country totaled one million 168 thousand. The majority were born in American countries (the United States, first of all); from Europe (Spain stands out as the country of origin).
According to one of the studies in the Mexico 2022 Migration and Remittances Yearbook, a publication by the National Population Council, BBVA Research and BBVA Foundation, the foreign-born population that lived in Mexico in 2020 was concentrated in a few federal entities, with more of 100 thousand people, among which stand out: Baja California, with 142 thousand 707 people, Mexico City (106 thousand 184), Chihuahua (97 thousand 812) and Jalisco (87 thousand 619 residents).
The majority of the US-born population residing in Mexico is young, under 20 years of age, and is mainly found in Baja California, Chihuahua and Jalisco, so it is not surprising that many have chosen Ajijic as their second home.
