The incredible images of a pink, purple and green sky could initially be observed in Germany, Austria, Denmark, Spain and Italy, but as the hours passed they spread to multiple states in North America, being visible even in some parts of Mexico.

¿Por qué se vieron las auroras boreales en México? | Aquí te explicamos

On Friday night, unusual northern lights were visible that illuminated the night in various parts of the world due to a phenomenon of “extreme” geomagnetic conditions not seen in 20 years, together with solar storms that occurred in the last 48 hours, which together created the beautiful view but they also represent effects on satellites and telecommunications.

Therefore, here we present how these phenomena resulted in the impressive images visible from Mexico, something that has not happened for 165 years.

Unusual Geomagnetic Conditions

According to the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “extreme geomagnetic conditions” were reported hours before the appearance of the auroras for the first time since October 2003 and could continue throughout the weekend.

This geomagnetic storm has the potential to severely harm the energy and electricity supply in different parts of the Earth, but it is also the main cause of the famous lights visible in the north of the planet reaching various parts of the world.

The alert that was issued was on the G5 scale (the maximum on a G1-G5 scale) after several days of intense solar activity that increased this Friday.

A G5 geomagnetic storm can cause widespread voltage control problems on the power grid, damage transformers, and even cause complete blackouts.
