The College of Water Engineers monitors the behavior of the climate in the state with satellite images; there is an alert, they warn

Satellite images recorded temperatures of up to 50 degrees in unpopulated areas of the state of Guanajuato, one of these in a depopulated area of the El Tejamanil community, located between Irapuato and Romita.

René Mendoza, president of the College of Water Engineers, highlighted in an interview that this could mean a much more serious situation than expected and may even mean greater risk for the future of water in the state.

He explained that the future of climatological monitoring lies precisely in satellite images, as they offer a more specific measurement by area, unlike climatological stations, which is a topic that must continue to be explored to have continuous monitoring.

“What we have analyzed is that the coverage of the meteorological and climatological stations is very scarce, with the satellite image we have a resolution per pixel of 1,120 meters, that means that we now have the ability to know what the behavior of the temperatures.”

He highlighted that within this image it was possible to notice that the warmest areas are found in unpopulated parts, in the peripheries, unlike what was believed, that in cities the temperature was higher due to the warming of the ground, which means in some way an important impact in terms of the extraction and consumption of water.

“This should undoubtedly have us alarmed, mainly because it means that in all the monitors that could exist, we do not have real values, nor a diagnosis and if we have high temperatures, surely the use, extraction and consumption of water would have to be greater to what the authorities are reporting to us today.”

René Mendoza highlighted that the countryside has a great area of opportunity, since work must be done to resume strategies such as green walls that helped crops against heat and pests and the lack of these also have an impact, however currently the lack of water that exists and the high temperatures generated a vicious circle.

“The truly critical thing is in the countryside, there who is going to plant trees, who is going to take care of them and passes all the cities of the Industrial Corridor, which is where the highest temperature is shown, but one would actually think that the cities are the hottest, and it turns out that no, the warmest is found on the outskirts of the cities.”
