MÉRIDA, Yuc.- Although the extreme heat continues in Yucatán for the moment, the City Council of Mérida will start the so-called Forest Crusade from Friday, June 14 to Sunday, July 14, a time when rain is expected in Yucatán as part of the tropical cyclone season in the Atlantic.

As you may recall, the Forest Crusade is the urban planting event that takes place in Mérida at the beginning of the rainy season, thus strengthening the possibility of tree survival.

In the first edition, in 2014, 1,000 trees were planted and 300 were given up for adoption.

The current edition of the crusade aims to add 8,500 more trees to the urban inventory of Mérida.

Ecological support

According to the Mérida municipality, this project not only enriches local biodiversity with more than 120 different species, including regional fruit trees, but also strengthens the city’s green infrastructure.

It was also noted that Mérida is preparing to receive, for the fifth time, the recognition of Tree City of the World from international organizations such as the Arbor Day Foundation and the FAO.
In addition, it is preparing for the Sixth National Forum on Tropical Arboriculture, which will further promote the importance of tree planting in urban areas.
