American Migration to Mexico Doubles Recent data from the Mexican government reveals a significant rise in American migration to Mexico.
From January to April 2023 and 2024, the number of Americans relocating to Mexico doubled from 310 to 625. The majority of these migrants are male, with 407 men and 218 women moving this year.
Yahoo! Finance lists affordable living costs, including housing, healthcare, and utilities, as well as job opportunities and easier work visa access as reasons for Americans moving to Mexico.
Meanwhile, concerns over illegal immigration into the U.S. persist. President Biden’s recent executive order halts asylum processing at the southern border when daily crossings exceed 2,500, resuming only when they drop below 1,500.
Despite this order, border encounters remain high. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported over 3,500 encounters just before the order’s implementation, with around 4,000 apprehensions on June 5 alone.
Legal challenges to Biden’s order are anticipated, with groups like the ACLU arguing it harms asylum seekers without improving immigration policies.
Mexico’s newly elected president, Claudia Sheinbaum, faces pressure on immigration issues. Her approach may be influenced by U.S. policies and the upcoming American election.
Professor Margath Walker suggests that Mexico’s response to U.S. demands, such as deportations and a busing program moving migrants away from the border, will shape Sheinbaum’s stance on immigration.
