The Santa Catarina River suddenly rose due to the intense rains that have been recorded in the capital of Nuevo Leon, which are estimated to continue during the weekend.
Since 6:00 pm on Wednesday, June 19, the rise in the Santa Catarina River that crosses the municipalities of Monterrey, Santiago, Santa Catarina, San Pedro, Guadalupe, Juarez and Cadereyta Jimenez in the state of Nuevo Leon was reported.
This is a consequence of the arrival of Tropical Storm “Alberto” that made landfall in the early hours of this Thursday in Tamaulipas, hours later it became a tropical depression and during its passage it will mainly affect the states of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Puebla, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosi and Veracruz.
The increase in the flow of water has caused the closure of roads adjacent to the river such as Morones Prieto Avenue.
Civil Protection of Monterrey reported damage to the express lane on Avenida Constitución and Venustiano Carranza, where the force of the water knocked down part of the pavement that makes up that road.
Governor Samuel García implemented a surveillance operation of the rivers and dams that make up the state, suspending all types of activities in the state during the night of Wednesday, June 19 and all of Thursday, June 20.
Through a video he reported that the La Boca dam had reached 80% of its capacity and that a gate would be opened to allow water to flow to the El Cuchillo dam, this in order to have controlled storage.
Minutes later, he reported that between 4:00 and 4:30 in the afternoon a report will be given from the government building where the balance of today will be given and the safety instructions for the population to follow during the day tomorrow will be announced.
He stressed that he has already traveled some rivers and that they are all full “we are traveling the rivers, from the Santa Catarina River to the Potosí River, all the rivers bring water to the Cierro Prieto and Libertad dams and almost all the rivers reach the Cuchillo.”
He pointed out that the most intense “has already passed,” however, he asked the population to continue taking care of themselves and to continue with all the security measures “let’s protect ourselves, do not trust them, because very high layers of cloud continue to arrive, there are still very intense rains in Santa Catarina, Guadalupe and Monterrey.”
