A video surveillance camera captured a leader of the Sinaloa Cartel (CDS) entering an exclusive subdivision, leading a convoy that followed him, escorted by four municipal police officers in two patrol cars. This led to the suspension of the uniformed officers and the start of an investigation.

On June 14 at 3:30 a.m., a 1:27 minute video shows a convoy of thirteen private vehicles being escorted.

The head of Public Security in Mexicali, Pedro Ariel Mendivil, confirmed that the vehicles do belong to the corporation and the four agents are identified.

This is how the alleged criminal leader was captured, escorted by police officers:

“The four people were assigned to a different assignment, to a non-operational area and one of them, who was a shift manager, was relieved of his position, obviously taking away his position,” he said. This in addition to the filing of a complaint with the Municipal Council.
The agents were allegedly escorting Josué Godínez Fernández, El Pitufo, a member of a faction of Ismael El Mayo Zambada of the CDS that operates in the state capital.

His face appears on a wanted poster of the Baja California State Force for Citizen Security, as he is considered a priority target for the authorities.

The governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, described what happened as “very serious” and asked the authorities of Mexicali to clarify whether the preventive police were actually guarding a convoy of criminals, including one of the most wanted criminals in the state.
