BYD factory in Mexico: How many jobs will it generate and when will the announcement be made?

BYD is preparing the final negotiations to define the location of its plant in Mexico, so an announcement is expected in the following months.

BYD’s plans to build a plant in Mexico will create about 10,000 jobs, putting it in line with some of the country’s largest auto factories.

The electric vehicle giant is in final negotiations for the facility’s location, with an official announcement expected in the coming months, Jorge Vallejo, BYD’s general manager in Mexico, said in an interview Tuesday.

He did not say how many of those workers would be directly employed by BYD versus contractors or suppliers.

A plant of that size would employ more people than facilities at other automakers in the country, such as Audi.

Volkswagen’s plant in Puebla, the country’s largest, employs 6,100 assembly line workers and 5,000 supervisory employees, plus thousands of people who handle parts assembly.

BYD had received proposals from about 23 Mexican states for its plant, Vallejo said, and has narrowed them down to three.

The automaker is on track to sell 50,000 units in the country this year, Vallejo said.

Last month, BYD launched its Shark hybrid pickup truck in Mexico, yet another sign of the country’s growing importance to the company.

It is the hybrid pickup truck that will be available globally, and prices will start at around $53,400.

BYD has no plans to sell in the United States, the largest single market for pickup trucks, for now.

Still, the timing of the event was awkward, coming on the same day that U.S. President Joe Biden announced sweeping tariff increases on a variety of Chinese imports, including a quadrupling of duties on Chinese-made electric vehicles.
