At the end of 2023, the airport was about to break its own record, by mobilizing a total of 29 million 729 thousand 198 passengers.

Air passenger traffic in scheduled service in Mexico has shown a remarkable recovery in recent years following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past decade, the country recorded continuous growth in the number of people transported, exceeding 100 million in 2019.

However, in the following two years, air activity in Mexico began to rebound as the world adapted to the “new normal.” In 2022, the number of passengers again approached pre-health crisis values.

During that year, the busiest international air route in Mexico was the one connecting Dallas and Los Angeles with Mexico City, reaching approximately 1.2 million passengers. This route underlines the importance of the links between Mexico and the United States for international traffic.

As for domestic routes, the busiest connection was the one between Mexico City and Cancun, a major tourist destination that continues to attract a large number of travelers.

Volaris, a Mexican low-cost airline, has managed to surpass the country’s flag carrier, Aeromexico, in the number of passengers transported on domestic flights. This trend reflects a significant change in the air transport market.

The entry and growth of low-cost airlines in the market have altered the pre-existing dynamic, occurring gradually but with a clear impact. Volaris has experienced considerable growth, positioning itself as one of the most important airlines in Latin America, along with Gol and Azul, both Brazilian and also low-cost.

Volaris’ dominance over Aeromexico is due to various factors, including competitive prices and an optimized cost structure. This phenomenon is also observed in other markets where traditional airlines are being challenged by low-cost operators, who have managed to capture a significant market share.

Volaris’ success and prominent position in the region reflect a change in passenger preferences, who are now looking for more affordable options and efficient services. This change not only affects Aeromexico, but also poses challenges for other traditional airlines on the continent.
