Marcelo Ebrard, the future Secretary of Economy, was born on October 10, 1959, in Mexico City. He holds a degree in International Relations from El Colegio de México and specialized in public administration at the École Nationale d’Administration in Paris. Ebrard began his public service career in 1985, participating in the Housing Renewal Program after the earthquake that struck the capital that year.
In 1987, he coordinated the creation of the General Law of Ecological Balance, which includes programs such as the “Hoy No Circula” (No-Driving Day) initiative currently in place. Ebrard also served as a federal deputy in 1997.
During Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s tenure as head of the Mexico City government, Ebrard held positions as Secretary of Public Security and Secretary of Social Development. In 2006, he was elected Mayor of Mexico City, and in 2010, he received the World Mayor Prize from the City Mayors Foundation.
In 2012, Ebrard aspired to become Mexico’s president, but the survey conducted by the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) did not favor him. He then supported López Obrador as the candidate, who ultimately lost the presidential race to the PRI candidate, Enrique Peña Nieto.
During López Obrador’s presidency, Ebrard served as Secretary of Foreign Affairs. In 2023, he once again sought the presidential candidacy, this time within the Morena party. Although the party’s internal poll did not favor him, he accepted the outcome and joined Sheinbaum’s campaign team as a coordinator for civil organizations and Mexicans abroad.
