A video has gone viral on social media showing a man identified as Héctor Castellanos being attacked by a swarm of bees in the Merle Oberón park in the Costa Azul subdivision in the port of Acapulco, Guerrero.
Fortunately for this man, he was rescued by Ricardo Tapia Santiago, an infantry soldier, who risked his physical integrity to save him.
“Without hesitation, without thinking twice, I went to help him. Despite that, I didn’t care, because he is a human being anyway, so we have to support him in whatever way we can,” declared Ricardo Tapia.
“I imagined my dad”
Originally from Cochoapa, in the municipality of Ometepec in Guerrero, Ricardo Tapia says that the heroic act was instinctive, since seeing a helpless person crying out for help was the trigger for deciding to help him. Thus, this element of the Mexican forces affirms that he would do it again as many times as necessary.
“I imagined my father because he is elderly and someday or at some point the same thing will happen to him, and I would like it and I would love for another person to come and do the same,” said the soldier.
Ricardo Tapia and other soldiers were returning from a tour when the emergency occurred, which they immediately responded to. After helping the man, firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene to treat his wounds and check his health.
Hero without a cape
People who knew Ricardo’s story have begun to call him “a hero without a cape.” This is because he is a human being who puts the protection of citizens above all else, even though he has only been in the Mexican army for two years.
In this way, Ricardo covered Hector’s face with a jacket to prevent the bee attack from continuing. However, even though he tried to protect himself, Ricardo was unable to prevent around 20 of them from stinging him, but he didn’t care, because he helped a 66-year-old man.
What to do in the event of a bee attack?
Civil Protection and Firefighters of Acapulco issued recommendations in the event of being victims of a bee attack, but first explained that bee venom contains pheromones, which attract other bees, so it is not unusual for others to occur after a sting if the place where it occurred is not abandoned.
In the event of being attacked by bees:
Stay calm. Think in an orderly manner about the steps to be followed and act accordingly.
If the insect has left a stinger, never press the sac. Peel it off with a fingernail from the inside out.
Go to the nearest medical services.
If the sting has occurred on the arms or legs, make a tourniquet over them and loosen it every 10 minutes.
