One of the oldest buildings in the port, located on the corner of Héroes del Cañonero and Isauro Alfaro in the eastern part of downtown Tampico, gave way to the rain and a part of its facade collapsed, with several pieces of its structure falling onto the sidewalk.
It was during the morning of Thursday, July 11, that people passing by the place reported to 911 the fall of material on the sidewalk of Isauro Alfaro Street, so they immediately mobilized personnel from the Municipal Civil Protection Secretariat who arrived at the scene to assess the situation.
An interior slab fell and caused the building to collapse
Pedro Romero Sánchez, Secretary of Civil Protection of Tampico, said that if contact is made with the owner, part of this building that dates back to the beginning of the last century will be demolished, since the risk it now generates is high and they are seeking to avoid further danger to the population.
“The building is very damaged and the climate that prevails in Tampico caused an interior slab of the building to fall, which caused the detachment of the facade. Fortunately, there are no injuries or damage to third parties, since no cars or other buildings in the area were affected,” he said.
We are seeing a lack of maintenance, said the municipal official, “it had been deteriorating and now a slab is falling and that affects what is the facade. Through an inspection that will be carried out with a drone, the level of risk will be verified and in a collegial manner the decision will be made to eliminate the danger.”
He said that specialists will be inspecting the condition of the structure of this building in order to carry out the required work and avoid putting more people at risk since the area has a high vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Pedestrian and vehicle traffic is blocked
He mentioned that the application of a fine will be considered, in addition to the owner being charged for the work being carried out by the city council to remove some of the levels, which are already extremely deteriorated and could also collapse.
Several public transport routes are being diverted, since traffic on Isauro Alfaro and Héroes del Cañonero streets is completely interrupted, as well as the passage of people trying to walk through the area, since there is still a high risk.
