San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato The price per liter of natural orange juice has reached 100 pesos in cafeterias, restaurants and juice and fresh fruit stores in the markets of San Miguel de Allende.
Due to the increase in the cost of inputs, the Ignacio Ramírez market vendors have had to increase their prices, even sacrificing their income, since in the case of oranges the profit is almost zero.
The price of orange juice reached 100 pesos per liter, and a half-liter glass is charged at 55 pesos, however, the merchants point out that they do not earn anything, since the kilo of the fruit has increased so much in recent weeks, that they have no choice but to sell it “almost at cost.”
In fruit stores in the same market, oranges are sold at 55 pesos per kilo and, due to the high cost, most of the stalls have little product since people prefer to buy other fruit.
“If in Celaya, where we get the oranges, the liter of juice costs 100 pesos, imagine here! It should even be more expensive because we spend time and money going to stock up,” said one of the tenants.
Drinks, more expensive than food
The same thing happens in food businesses, they have few oranges because people prefer to drink carrot juice, fresh water or soft drinks, than pay the high cost of a citrus juice, which is more expensive even than a cake, a hamburger or an order of quesadillas.
“We still have to have it, because there are people who ask for it,” said one of the merchants who pointed out that sometimes they find cheaper oranges, but it is not worth it “because it is bitter and has almost no juice, so in the end it is more expensive.”
