Lawmaker Reports Rivers in Tabasco Turning Pink; Requests Information on Conditions

Soraya Pérez, a local legislator from the PRI party, has requested a report from the Secretariat for Energy Development (Sedener) regarding the condition of two rivers in Tabasco.

After images circulated on social media showing two rivers and a lagoon in Paraíso, Tabasco, with pink-colored waters, Soraya Pérez, the local PRI legislator, issued a statement addressed to the Secretariat for Energy Development (Sedener). In her statement, she requested information on the conditions of these two rivers and the lagoon, following complaints from local residents about alleged contamination caused by a refinery.

The legislator’s communication highlights that inhabitants from various communities in Paraíso, Tabasco, have expressed concern about the current state of the Limoncito and Seco rivers, as well as the Mecoacán lagoon. Recently, their natural color has changed to “pink tones,” and there have been reports of dead fish.

In addition to reporting the pink color of the river waters, some neighbors have also complained of health issues, according to the legislator’s statement.

“Furthermore, residents report health problems such as eye irritation, nasal allergies, lung and stomach issues, and difficulty breathing due to the strong odor caused by pollutants from the refinery that enter the mentioned river.”

The legislator formally requested information on the actions taken by the authorities to determine the cause of the water discoloration in these rivers.

“Based on the above, I request information on the actions implemented to determine the causes of the aforementioned situation. Additionally, please provide details on mitigation measures, investigations, and applicable sanctions against those responsible for the damage to these emblematic bodies of water in the municipality of Paraíso. Attached to this communication, I include photographic evidence provided by the residents of Villa Puerto Ceiba.”
