The decline in international traveler arrivals at Cancún Airport reached 13.8% in July compared to the same month in 2023, particularly among American tourists. However, Tulum Airport has gained momentum, welcoming over 210,000 international passengers in the first half of the year.
Hoteliers attribute this decline to various factors. One reason is “American fatigue,” as travelers may have visited Mexico repeatedly over the years. Additionally, new Caribbean destinations, including those in the Dominican Republic and Europe, are becoming more popular.
Security concerns in Quintana Roo destinations also play a role. The high-profile case of the 12-year-old boy’s murder in Cancún received significant coverage in the United States. However, data from Starc, led by Francisco Madrid in Cancún, indicates that other destinations like Los Cabos experienced an 8% decrease, and Vallarta saw an 8.7% decline.
As reported by REPORTUR.mx, the Mexican Caribbean is increasingly affected by reduced tourism from its four main Latin American markets: Colombia, Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador, each for different reasons.
The Advanced Research Center for Sustainable Tourism (STARC) report from Anáhuac Cancún highlights that Ecuador, due to severed diplomatic relations between the countries, has seen 50,000 people refrain from traveling, even though they can enter Mexico with a Schengen or American visa. Similarly, 10,000 travelers from Peru have avoided these destinations due to visa requirements in the past two months.
