This Sunday marked 72 hours since the residents of the Bajos de Coyula community blocked federal highway 200 in front of the Bahías de Huatulco International Airport, to express their disagreement with the designation of 2,800 hectares as a Protected Natural Area.

The protesters began their mobilization last Friday, blocking the highway, but decided to strengthen their protest after speaking with the Secretary of Government, Jesús Romero, because they considered that his attitude was to minimize the mobilization, since he told them “you can stay there, it is your right, one year, a thousand years you can stay.”

In addition, he offered to set up a dialogue table with federal and state authorities on Thursday, that is, almost a week later, which caused the annoyance of the residents of Bajos de Coyula because they point out the disdain of the official.

This led to protesters closing the airport terminal with cyclone fencing early on Saturday, which forced 9 flights to be suspended. In response, the Secretary of Government intervened again, arranging a meeting for Wednesday.

On Saturday night, the official announced in a video posted on his social networks that a working meeting will be held on Wednesday in Huatulco, where the head of the National Commission for Protected Areas, Humberto Peña, will travel to address this problem; but not before attacking the protesters.
