It is feasible to build a passenger train between Mexico City and Querétaro: CPKC of Mexico

Oscar Del Cueto Cuevas, president and executive representative of Canadian Pacific Kansas City of Mexico, says that the construction of a passenger train between Mexico City and Querétaro is feasible, since there is demand and it would help mobility in the central region of the country.

“Yes, it is feasible since there is demand, there is even talk of 4 frequencies in each direction and it could work with a much better independent infrastructure,” he said at the end of his participation in the forum “Biggest Challenges of the Mexican Railway Sector,” organized by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Mexican-German Chamber of Commerce.

He said that studies are still needed to determine the infrastructure, such as tunnels and bridges, that must be adequate for a passenger train to run from Buenavista to Querétaro.

“We committed to the study of the Mexico-Querétaro (passenger train), which we already delivered to the Secretariat (of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation), we already delivered the results, we already delivered the information and data that they asked us for and today it is in the hands of the secretariat,” he declared.

We recommend: Maya Train will require an extra 35,000 million pesos to be a cargo train: Sheinbaum

The administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador will deliver the study of the Mexico-Querétaro train to the future government of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, so we are waiting to see if there is an additional requirement.

In 2023, a company based in the United States was in charge of carrying out the study for the project, said the director.

The speed of the Mexico train, using the tracks for the transfer of cargo, will be 120 kilometers per hour, and “if we make an independent track with infrastructure, we can already reach 200 kilometers per hour.”

“One of the challenges is the right of way. If we are going to use the rights of way that we have, then we will have to acquire new ones and we will have to clear some that are invaded. It could be a faster project,” he commented.

The study took the infrastructure as a basis, but ended up considering an independent road, he added.

The president-elect’s proposal is to build 3,000 kilometers of new roads in order to solve passenger transportation.

“She talked about using the right of way of the concessions, which could be feasible in some sections and that will accelerate investment,” he pointed out.

He added that the use of cargo infrastructure is not ideal, but the president-elect’s proposal is to build new roads for passengers and that is the appropriate solution.

Claudia Sheinbaum presented to businessmen her plan for the construction of 8 passenger train lines, among which the Mexico-Querétaro, Querétaro-León, Querétaro-Guadalajara, AIFA-Pachuca, León-Aguascalientes, Manzanillo-Colima, Guadalajara-Irapuato, Tepic-Mazatlán-Nogales, Mexico-San Luis Potosí-Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo, Mexico-Puebla-Veracruz and Aguascalientes-Chihuahua sections stand out.
