Reynosa Mayor’s Father Attacked with Firearms; Tamaulipas Prosecutor’s Office Investigates

Tamaulipas authorities confirmed that Carlos Luis Peña Garza, father of the mayor of Reynosa, Carlos Peña Ortiz, suffered an armed attack on the afternoon of Monday, August 19, on the streets of said municipality.

The state Security Spokesperson reported that Peña Garza was attacked by a pair of armed subjects. The Attorney General’s Office of Tamaulipas is investigating whether it was an attack, a kidnapping or an attempted robbery.

The events occurred in the Longoria neighborhood, where Peña Garza was aboard his vehicle (a white Nissan Frontier pickup truck, 2022 model). When he was parked outside a convenience store, he was intercepted by two unknown individuals.

In a quick action, Peña Garza managed to evade his attackers, who were forced to flee the scene in a blue Nissan Sentra vehicle. The father of the mayor of Reynosa decided to follow said subjects in his truck, which generated a road chase.

During these acts, Peña Garza hit the blue vehicle twice. In response, the attackers shot at his truck once, which received a bullet impact in the hood.

Later, the authorities received a call through 911 in which they reported the armed aggression against the father of the mayor of Reynosa. This is how the police corporations went to the scene of what happened to corroborate the reports.

In the photographs spread on social networks, you can see the Nissan Frontier truck in which Peña Garza was riding, which had damage to the front. Although the victim’s health status was not disclosed, it was reported that the corresponding investigations have already begun. So far, there are no people arrested.

“The investigations and expert tests have begun to locate those responsible. The Attorney General’s Office of Tamaulipas is in charge of the investigations. Once we have the complete report, it will be released,” said the State Security Spokesperson.

Despite what happened, the mayor of Reynosa, Carlos Peña Ortiz, has not spoken out about the armed attack against his father, so the possible causes of the attack are unknown.

Carlos Peña Ortiz studied International Relations and Political Science at The George Washington University. He later graduated from Harvard University with a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Before serving as mayor of Reynosa, he worked at the Center for Social Justice as a legal translator in Washington, DC. In 2020, he was appointed president of the Board of Trustees of the Reynosa DIF System.

In the last elections held in June, Peña Ortiz was elected for the second time as mayor of Reynosa under the coalition “Together Let’s Keep Making History.”
