Homicides in Mexico increase 3.12% in July, reaching 2,546 cases

In July 2024, Mexico recorded 2,546 intentional homicides, representing an increase of 3.12% compared to the same month of the previous year, according to the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC).

This increase breaks the downward trend that had been observed in the previous months of this year.

From January to July 2024, 17,660 murders were recorded, 0.3% more than the 17,607 recorded in the first seven months of 2023. However, homicides in July show a decrease of 4.86% compared to the 2,676 cases in June, marking the end of four consecutive months of increases.

Six states account for almost half of the homicides in the country: Guanajuato, Baja California, State of Mexico, Chihuahua, Jalisco and Guerrero, which totaled 7,841 murders in the first seven months of the year.

On the other hand, federal crimes and femicides showed a decline.

These figures are published in a context in which homicides in Mexico decreased by 6.68% in 2023, marking the third consecutive year of decline after the most violent year in the country’s recent history, which was 2020 with 36,773 victims.
