Three Oaxaca police officers arrested for abusing a colleague

Three members of the Municipal Police of Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca, were arrested for allegedly having sexually assaulted a colleague of the same corporation.

The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Oaxaca reported that the agents were identified as J.A.M.V., P.H.B. and M.A.C.R.

The events allegedly occurred in the Valles Centrales region on April 22, 2024, when the victim was carrying out patrol activities in the municipality of Santa María Atzompa aboard an official vehicle when she was sexually assaulted by her colleagues.

The Prosecutor’s Office maintains the identity of the victim under protection and did not provide further details about what happened, but confirmed that the female police officer filed the corresponding criminal complaint, which was handled by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes against Women Based on Gender.

After carrying out the first inquiries, the FGE gathered sufficient evidence for a judge to issue arrest warrants against J.A.M.V., P.H.B. and M.A.C.R. for the crime of aggravated sexual abuse.

The three police officers were placed at the disposal of a judge who will determine their legal status in the coming days.

How sexual abuse is punished in Oaxaca

According to the Penal Code of the State of Oaxaca, the crime of sexual abuse is committed when a person performs or has a sexual act performed, other than copulation, or forces a person to observe any sexual act without their consent, and a penalty of three to six years in prison is established.

In addition, when the crime is committed by a public servant, the person responsible will be disqualified, dismissed or suspended for a time equal to the duration of the prison sentence, as well as the non-application of the benefit of early release in execution of the sentence.
