A black turtle, a species that generally nests mainly in the state of Michoacán, was located on the beaches of Mazatlán when it came out to lay its eggs. The event is doubly special, because it is a specimen that had already been here, but in 2021.
This unique event was recorded this Wednesday, when the turtle came out on two occasions to the side of Plaza Valentinos, where it did not lay its eggs due to being a rocky area; later it was seen in front of Del Mar and Lola Beltrán avenues, where it laid 98 eggs, which were protected and incubated.
Personnel from the Operator and Administrator of Beaches of the Mazatlán City Council, in charge of the sea turtle protection program, were present at the nesting of this black turtle, to rescue the eggs it laid, take them to incubation and protect them until they hatch.
Thanks to the fact that this turtle was marked in 2021 with the following metallic tag, GT-15558 and GT-7482, OAP personnel recognized it and took special care of it.
That year, the nesting female arrived at Mazatlán beaches on nine occasions and nested on 4, because she did not find the right conditions for spawning. In that season she laid 250 eggs on the four occasions; two of them in front of the Miramar building, once in front of Las Gavias and also in front of Maracuyá, on Avenida del Mar.
The municipal department announced that it continues with the permanent program of protection for sea turtles that arrive on the beaches of Mazatlán, so the staff remains attentive, since the protection zone includes the tourist beaches, as well as the coastal strip that extends from Olas Altas to Cerritos.
People who observe the arrival of a turtle on the coast should report it to 9-1-1 so that specialized personnel can come to protect and rescue the nests, since it is a protected species.
