More than 1,085,000 senior citizens live in Jalisco

In the framework of the National Day of Older Adults, the Institute of Statistical and Geographic Information released the latest data on this sector as of June 2024, representing 12.3 percent of the total population of the state of Jalisco, that is, one million 85 thousand 609 inhabitants, of which 46.2 percent are men and 53.8 percent women.

From 2010 to 2024, the proportion of people over 60 years of age grew 31 percent, going from 9.1 to 12 percent of the population.

According to population projections, by 2030 this proportion will be 14.6 percent, reaching one million 353 thousand 637 people aged 60 and over. That is, there will be an increase of 24.7 percent in the next six years

Regarding marital status, 57.6 percent (763,498) were married; and 3.1 percent (40,683) lived in free union.

On the other hand, those older adults who were once in a union, 5.2 percent (68,898) were separated, 1.7 percent (22,106) divorced and 22.5 percent (298,075) were widowed; while 9.9 percent (131,803) were single.

In education, as of the first quarter of 2024, 31.4 percent had a maximum level of incomplete primary schooling and 28 percent had completed it; 19.7 percent had completed secondary school and 20.9 percent had at least one grade passed at the high school and/or college level.

The municipalities with the most people from this sector of the population were Guadalajara (252,176), Zapopan (199,600), San Pedro Tlaquepaque (73,293), Tonalá (51,027), Tlajomulco de Zúñiga (44,596), Puerto Vallarta (31,388) and El Salto (19,369).

These seven municipalities account for 61.8 percent, corresponding to 67,449 of the population in that age group.
