Foreign tourism to Mérida grows

The arrival of foreign tourists to Mérida has increased over the last three years. At the beginning of the current municipal administration, only 8 percent of arrivals at the capital’s airport were from this segment, and currently, they represent between 15 and 16 percent, reported the Director of Economic Development and Tourism of the city council, José Luis Martínez Semerena.

“Today, there is a greater interest from foreigners in coming to the city of Mérida. Mainly, they are visitors from the United States, followed by the French and Canadians,” he said.

Martínez Semerena recalled that we are in the final stretch of the July and August holidays, a period that the Tourism Directorate of the municipality considered successful. Between hotels and platform accommodations, he said, there was a 63 percent occupancy rate in the state capital, a figure very similar to last year.

“We are very happy, with the children returning to school, and now we will continue promoting the upcoming festivals and what is coming for the end of the year,” he stated.
