Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, former leader of the Gulf Cartel and founder of Los Zetas, is released from prison in the United States

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) released Osiel Cardenas Guillen, founder of the Los Zetas cartel and former leader of the Gulf Cartel, today Friday and according to information confirmed by this newspaper with the US Bureau of Prisons (BOP), he left at 12 noon Eastern.

He will not be given witness protection nor will he be returned to Mexico, confirmed the DEA.

Cardenas Guillen, 57 years old and who faces several charges in Mexico, was placed in the custody of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE), detailed the BOP.

The released detainee can leave the United States and go wherever he decides to do so.

Less time in prison for good behavior
Cardenas Guillen pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, money laundering and threats against federal agents. He was extradited to the US in January 2007.

In 2010, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to pay $50 million. It was also reported at the time that he had reached a plea agreement and that his prison time was reduced for good behaviour.
