Three stories of successful entrepreneurship in La Paz

At the third Expo Emprendedor 2024, creativity from La Paz captivated, which included presentations and samples of local products and various ventures. Of course, “Dolsheando” is one of the businesses that stands out for its success in the tasting and the attitude of the entrepreneurs, who have permission from COFEPRIS and a trademark registration already in process.

Dolsheando is the success story that captivates and attracts along with the flavor of its product; an artisanal cream liqueur made by Betina Ángel and Iván Ayala, produced at home based on rum or whiskey in 10 different flavors: coffee, cherry, choco-cherry, choco-marzipan, choco-mint, Hershey, cinnamon, mango, coconut, marzipan, Nutella and pistachio, the most popular and recommended by them is choco-mint.

TWO TRAGEDIES, ONE SUCCESS STORY

Betina Angel, a lawyer, criminologist and teacher in forensic ballistics, is now the president of the “Doslchelovers” club and is the one who tells her story. After losing her little baby, she decided to channel her pain into a handmade product while her husband was recovering from a disability caused by work stress in his job as a computer systems engineer for a German company.

Blind in one eye and with a motor disability, Iván Ayala says that working under pressure caused him a lifelong disability caused by a stroke, although at first glance it is not noticeable due to his positive attitude: “what was occupational therapy became our family business when we decided to give it our all,” said Iván while hugging Betina and his little son.

Her visual and motor disability did not affect her sensitive palate, so a little chemistry and a little talent led them to the elaboration of the first artisanal cream from La Paz, which already has two points of sale and they are on the way to opening a market for their products in Todos Santos and Cabo San Lucas after their tour of exhibitions in Aguascalientes, Puebla, joining the group of artisans from La Paz upon their return.

FOR EVERY WRONG MEZCAL AND FOR EVERY GOOD TOO

Of Zapotec ancestors from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca, Ivet Ortiz, who has lived in La Paz for 50 years, is dedicated to making flavored mezcal, distilled from worms, maguey breast, white miner, aged with many worms, aged and tobalá, made in Oaxaca, is the raw material for the elaboration of the flavored mezcal liquor with pitahaya, apple, tamarind, hibiscus, mango and pomegranate.

Since mezcal is a must for drinking worm salt, she makes it by hand at home thanks to the knowledge inherited from her parents, a process that is secret, but the raw material is the maguey worm, even though the people of La Paz usually drink beer, they have accepted the flavored mezcal with pleasure, says Ivet.

Her product is sold cold and in 250 and 850 milliliter glass bottles for 180 and 360 pesos, respectively. Everything is handmade, she explains that mezcal is the original maguey drink even though tequila is the one that Mexicans identify most with, mezcal is made from the fermentation of the maguey through the filtration of a bird, the turkey, “that is why it is called maguey breast mezcal.”

ARTESANÍAS PACEÑAS DEL ESTERITO

Karla Lucero has been dedicated for 5 years to the manufacture of handicrafts from La Paz, such as mother-of-pearl key chains, decorated hats and bags, bottle openers, ornaments made with choya and souvenirs for tourists, all thanks to the teaching of her mother and her brothers with whom she learned to paint as a younger daughter.

The company consists of her husband José Ignacio Jáuregui extracting the shells from the sea and going to the mountain to bring the raw material, clean it and prepare it. Karla explains “I am not an entrepreneur, but Mrs. Lorena Hinojosa broadened my vision in yesterday’s talk” she explained that her participation in the Expo Emprendedores filled her with a lot of optimism “I attended very discouraged due to the lack of spaces but I left motivated”

She regretted that they ask them to regularize when that implies a very high expense for new entrepreneurs “there are only two options: rent or supplies” she affirmed that this topic was not touched on during the conferences; however, thanks to the motivation of the speakers she will now seek to grow as a business despite the unfair situations that vendors of semi-fixed stalls such as handicraft vendors face, she pointed out.
