In Veracruz, almost 70% of people work in the informal sector: INEGI

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reports that in the state of Veracruz, 68% of people who have a job earn income through informal work that is not subject to national legislation, do not pay taxes, do not have social protection coverage and completely lack employment-related benefits.

It places Veracruz in its National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE) among the states with the highest levels of labor informality: “Oaxaca (80.2%), Guerrero (77.3%), Chiapas (74.8%), Hidalgo (72.9%), Puebla (69.7%), Tlaxcala (69.1%), Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave (68.3%), Morelos (67.0%) and Michoacán de Ocampo (65.8%).”

Instead, it highlights that Coahuila de Zaragoza (35.0%), Nuevo León (35.4%), Chihuahua (35.6%), Baja California (36.5%), Baja California Sur (36.9%) and Aguascalientes (40.4%) registered the lowest levels of labor informality during the second quarter of 2024.

Likewise, INEGI highlights that during the second quarter of 2024, the entities with the highest unemployment rates were: Mexico City and Tabasco (4.0%), Coahuila de Zaragoza (3.7%), Sonora (3.6%), Aguascalientes and Tamaulipas (3.4%), the State of Mexico (3.3%) and Guanajuato and Zacatecas (2.9%). The lowest rates for this indicator were reported in Guerrero (1.0%), Oaxaca (1.2%), Chiapas and Morelos (1.6%), Michoacán de Ocampo (1.7%), Yucatán (1.8%), as well as in Campeche and Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave (2.0%).

It indicates that Chiapas had the highest rate of critical occupation conditions (49.1%), followed by Tlaxcala (44.9%), Puebla (44.1%), and Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave (41.9%), Tamaulipas (40.8%), the State of Mexico (38.9%), Campeche (37.5%), Tabasco (37.2%), Guanajuato (34.9%), Hidalgo (34.8%), among others. For their part, Baja California Sur and Jalisco (20.7%), Nuevo León (21.7%), Sinaloa (21.8%), Colima (22.8%), Aguascalientes (23.3%) and Querétaro (25.2%) showed the lowest levels of employment in critical situations, in terms of income and hours worked.
