The Centenario Zoo Park in Mérida has been amazing generations of locals, nationals, and foreigners for 114 years, establishing itself as a city landmark. With a rich history and countless memories, we want to tell you more about this iconic place, its various attractions, and the activities you can enjoy with your family, partner, or friends.
Considered one of the oldest parks in Mexico, it was founded in 1910 and inaugurated by Porfirio Díaz. Originally intended as a botanical garden, it has undergone several renovations over the years, the most significant being in 1962 when the space was officially transformed into a zoo.
One of its most beloved attractions is the iconic little train, which for more than two decades has maintained its symbolic fare of $1 peso. This attraction was inaugurated on May 5, 1955, and has been giving tours around the park for 69 years, bringing smiles and creating unforgettable moments for families and friends.
Of course, we couldn’t forget to mention the zoo, which occupies about two hectares and houses 637 animals of 83 species, including felines, mammals, birds, reptiles, and more. Its animal diversity makes the visit a fun experience for all ages.
The park also offers other areas of interest that you can’t miss, such as mechanical rides, the aquarium, the food area, children’s playgrounds, the artificial lake, and the cable car, providing activities for all tastes.
The Centenario is much more than a zoo; it is a place full of history, fun, and family bonding that has managed to reinvent itself over more than a century. Today, it continues to be a fundamental space in the life of Mérida, where each visit becomes a journey through time, full of nostalgia and new experiences.
