Tulum Hoteliers Reject Taxi Drivers’ Blockades

They indicate that the blockades caused losses among tourists who were seeking to arrive at destinations in the Riviera Maya.

The Tulum Hotel Association rejected the blockades initiated by taxi drivers in the municipality in recent days, due to internal union issues with their leader.

David Ortiz Mena, president of the Tulum Hotel Association, rejected the blockades because they caused losses among various tourists who were seeking to arrive at destinations in the Riviera Maya.

“It is extremely misguided to seek to affect tourists for personal interests,” said Ortiz Mena.

The representative of this business sector pointed out that these actions led to the cancellation of several tourist groups.

“There is a greater impact that we cannot quantify, which is the damage to the destination’s image. This goes beyond a few hours or an afternoon; it undermines visitors’ confidence in coming or returning to the destination.”

David Ortiz Mena lamented that the taxi drivers do not have a greater awareness of the consequences of their actions, as by harming tourism, they also hurt their own economy.

“It is inadmissible, and we should not tolerate affecting visitors in this way; we trust that the authorities will do everything possible to prevent such events from happening again, because the economy of Quintana Roo largely depends on our visitors, and we cannot be affecting the most for the least,” emphasized the president of the Tulum Hotel Association.

The marches that blocked Federal Highway 307 occurred last Wednesday, to request the release of Eliazar Sagrero, general secretary of the Tiburones del Caribe taxi drivers’ union.

The now accused was released after his arrest by order of a control judge.

While a blockade was taking place in Tulum last Wednesday, a similar situation occurred at Cancún airport over the issue of Uber.

“The scenes seen at Cancún airport, of violence, transcend the image we have as a destination, it affects us all,” he reiterated. “We wonder why the summer was not as we expected. Here is an example of what not to do.”
