Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a strategic corridor for global trade: Ken Salazar

The United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, said that the Isthmus of Tehuantepec has the potential to become a key logistics corridor worldwide due to its ability to interconnect supply chains.

During his speech at the 3rd Binational Convention of the American Society, Salazar highlighted that this corridor can be a development engine for southeastern Mexico, favoring the integration of value chains that drive different economic sectors in the country.

Salazar stressed that supply chains not only generate economic opportunities, but also direct benefits for the local population. “The first thing is to offer opportunities for those who live there; the second is that it allows them to stay in their communities,” he said.

The ambassador also highlighted the importance of the bilateral relationship, calling Mexico the most relevant partner of the United States in the hemisphere. He reiterated that this collaboration will not change and expressed optimism about working with the next administration, headed by Claudia Sheinbaum, who, according to Salazar, understands the importance of this reality.

Since his arrival in Mexico, the diplomat assured that dialogue with different actors has improved, which has had positive impacts in areas such as security, borders, and trade between both nations. For Salazar, economic integration between the United States and Mexico is key to maintaining a united North America as an economic and democratic power.

Despite recent reforms in Mexico, Salazar emphasized that investments by American companies will continue, since both economies are deeply interconnected. In addition, he recognized the efforts of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in favor of the T-MEC, highlighting his historical role in the integration of North America and his contribution to the development of southeastern Mexico, especially in projects such as the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, he said.
