Will there be new 1, 2 and 5 peso coins? This is what Banxico explained

¿Habrá nuevas monedas de 1, 2 y 5 pesos? Esto explicó Banxico

The 1, 2 and 5 peso coins that we currently know will change in 2025.

Last December, Banxico proposed to the Ministry of Finance to change the metallic composition of these pieces.

“This Ministry has considered that the metallic composition of the center of the one, two and five peso coins that the Bank of Mexico has proposed is the most appropriate,” the Ministry of Finance published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF).

What materials are they made of?

The 1, 2 and 5 peso coins have an alloy of bronze and aluminum. The proposal of the Bank of Mexico is that these materials will now be replaced by bronze-coated steel.

The decree establishes that the change in materials will be in the central part of the coins, which means that starting next year there will be new coins in circulation.

Banxico must begin with a design process for the coins and once approved, the Mint will be commissioned to manufacture them.

Will 1, 2 and 5 peso coins disappear?

A change in the design of coins or bills does not mean that they will disappear. The decree published on Thursday indicates a change in the components of the coins, not an exit from circulation.

Even if the new coins enter circulation, the ones we know do not lose their value and will continue to circulate and maintain their purchasing power for the purchase of goods.
