Mauricio Trejo Pureco, mayor of San Miguel de Allende, said that citizen complaints and reaction points at the exits of the city are the shield that allows preventing violent events such as those that occur in the neighboring municipalities of Comonfort and Celaya.
San Miguel de Allende sets an example in crime prevention
“Many people ask themselves ‘what are the police doing standing there?’, they are reaction points so that once there is detection of something we don’t like we can react quickly from certain points, this strategy has been successful,” he said.
In addition to this, the mayor pointed out the importance of citizen participation as a key to crime prevention and training for Public Security elements.
“If there is an indignant society, it lends itself to a violent municipality,” he said and stressed that another important point is the economic remuneration of the police, which allows them to refuse to participate with criminal groups, in addition to the fact that they have life insurance of 5 million pesos.
“Police officers in San Miguel de Allende earn more than what they are offered outside, so it is also important that they do not buy them so easily,” he said.
