Civil Protection warns of increased earthquakes in Los Cabos

Protección Civil alerta sobre aumento de sismos en Los Cabos

Since the beginning of September, the National Seismological Service has begun to record a series of seismic movements in the Baja California Sur peninsula, mainly in the municipality of Los Cabos. According to the deputy director of Civil Protection, Jesús Iván Loya Villazana, only in the first 12 hours of September 16, around 55 earthquakes of lesser magnitude were reported, with an epicenter in the San José del Cabo area.

According to the National Seismological Service, between September 1 and 17, 2024, 1,848 earthquakes have been recorded in Baja California Sur, with magnitudes varying between 1.0 and 4.3 degrees. The strongest earthquake, measuring 4.3 degrees, occurred on September 3 in San José del Cabo.

“There have been 55 small seismic movements, the largest being 3.0 and they have been monitored through the National Seismological Service. We must take into account that we are in a seismic zone, but in recent days they have been felt more, this because they have all been close to the municipal capital; most of them on land. That is why some have been perceptible.”
Civil Protection highlighted that seismic activity in the region is due to its location on a fault, which causes most of the tremors to be practically imperceptible. Although these phenomena cannot be predicted, the agency stressed the importance of citizens staying informed and knowing what measures to take in case a new earthquake occurs.

“Most of the events will cause microseisms, we must keep in mind that it is a phenomenon that cannot be predicted. However, as an authority, what we encourage is information to the citizens and to be aware that lately they are already being perceptible; especially in the municipality of Los Cabos. We must be informed, and above all, aware of this type of events to know what corresponds to us as a society.”

Although there is a popular belief that September is a month with greater seismic activity, experts say there is no scientific evidence to support this. Earthquakes occur constantly throughout the year in various parts of the country, with no specific relationship to this month.
