Five Tulum Police Officers Processed for Corruption

A wave of complaints about cases of extortion or abuse of power emerged on social media.

Five members of the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection of Tulum are being processed by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office for the probable crime of corruption, informed the commander of this police corporation, Pedro Enrique Jaramillo Visoso.

Due to the wave of complaints on social media about alleged cases of extortion or abuse of power by police officers, the police command commented that they have addressed these complaints through the Internal Affairs Department and have also referred the most serious cases to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.

Jaramillo Visoso did not specify what crimes were committed or when, but he assured that the competent authority is handling the cases. “Also, on our part, in some complaints from citizens, we have referred them to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office. We are handling the case of five officers who were involved in a matter that was referred to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, and the resolution is still in process.”

He added that so far this month, they have received three complaints of probable acts of extortion, for which they are working. “Files are opened, an internal administrative investigation is initiated, and the entire investigation is conducted,” he explained.

He emphasized that the Secretariat insists a lot with the people who file these complaints to provide as much information as possible and even guides them to go to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office so that there is an investigation alongside the internal measures taken at the command.

Regarding whether any dismissals have occurred, he made it clear that so far, there has not been a single complaint that has reached that sanction or that result in the conclusion of the investigations. He emphasized that the corporation is committed to transparency and compliance with the law and assured that measures are being taken to ensure that internal procedures align with ethical and legal standards.
