Intense seismic activity causes structural damage to 30 buildings in Los Cabos

Sismo en Los Cabos.

Between September 1 and 17, 2024, 1,848 earthquakes have been recorded in Baja California Sur, with magnitudes ranging from 1.0 to 4.3 degrees. The strongest earthquake, measuring 4.3 degrees, occurred on September 3 in San José del Cabo.

The seismic activity in the region is due to its location on a fault, which makes most of the tremors barely perceptible. However, the head of Civil Protection, Jesús Iván Loya Villazana, reported that the tremors have caused structural damage to public and private buildings. Currently, damage is reported in 30 spaces, highlighting a house in the Puerto Nuevo neighborhood that was practically uninhabitable.

“Every time there is a report of a situation of structural damage, whether in public buildings or in private homes, we have gone with personnel to analyze a technical opinion of the facilities. Right now the most worrying issue is in a house in Puerto Nuevo, which was declared uninhabitable. There are more than 30 reports that we have attended to in the municipality of Los Cabos.”
Despite the lack of a culture of prevention and action against earthquakes in the municipality, the Civil Protection Directorate is working to raise awareness about the importance of being prepared, given that the region is located in a seismic zone.

This Thursday, September 19, at 10:00 a.m., a drill will be held at the Municipal Palace, with evacuation to the Teniente Antonio Mijares plaza, in commemoration of the National Civil Protection Day. The authorities invite citizens to participate to improve security and preparation for emergencies.
