Por decreto, Zipolite, patrimonio bicultural y única en nudismo

This recognition highlights the cultural and social importance of Zipolite, a coastal community that has been an emblematic destination for nudism since the 1970s, when it began to attract tourists in search of a space of freedom and acceptance.

Zipolite has evolved as an emblematic destination for nudism in Mexico, beginning with the arrival of hippie tourists seeking freedom and connection with nature.

Over the years, it has maintained its bohemian and tolerant atmosphere towards sexual diversity, attracting both nationals and foreigners.

According to stories and testimonies, Gloria Johnson stands out, known as “Aunt Gloria” who was the founder and owner of the renowned Shambahala hotel and the initiator of nudism where she says that she bathed and sunbathed daily on the beach also called Shambahala and after the eclipse of the 70’s, nationals and foreigners found in Zipolite the ideal place for this nudist practice with her example.

Therefore, Deputies of the Sixty-Fifth Constitutional Legislature of the Free and Sovereign State of Oaxaca gave a well-deserved recognition to Gloria Johnson as well as to founding members, the decree where Zipolite beach is recognized as Biocultural Heritage and the Only Nude Beach in the State of Oaxaca, which was delivered on the main beach of Zipolite.

This recognition also highlights the natural beauty, the cultural and historical value of the beach for San Pedro Pochutla and Oaxaca, and seeks to promote responsible tourism that respects the diversity and authenticity of the culture.
