Every September 24th, the image of La Merced is celebrated in San Cristóbal de las Casas and thousands of parishioners will attend to venerate the image that is inside the temple of La Merced located in the neighborhood of the same name, and since Sunday morning they carried out street parades in the main streets of the neighborhood, officially this day was the announcement for the festivities of the image that will last for 3 days, with different activities.
In this regard, Daniel Montoya, in an interview with the press said that September 24th is the date that the image of the Virgin of La Merced is celebrated, this Sunday from 3 in the morning there will be a street parade in the main streets of San Cristóbal and the ladies of the celebration committee will lead this route in different streets of the neighborhood of La Merced, “different activities will be taking place during the day, the priest of La Merced will be officiating masses on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.”

“The actual day of the Virgin of Mercy is the 24th of this month, with different events that will take place, the street parties took place from 3 in the morning this Sunday, it is the signal of the announcement of the great party of the neighborhood of Mercy, traditionally the so-called panzudos participate, we ask those who go to dress up in the streets to respect women, let’s do the festivities of the Virgin well, there will be rockets, drums, mariachis, bands, student groups, then we return to the Church,” he said.
Finally, Daniel Montoya, along with the organizers, said that for the day of the celebration, they will sing the mañanitas starting at 5:00 in the morning in honor of the Virgin, during the day there will be different activities inside and outside the Church, and they will launch fireworks on the night of Tuesday the 24th, and thus ends the Mercedarian festival.
