‘John’ is now a hurricane and is heading to Oaxaca; it is expected to reach category 3

Tropical storm John has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane as it heads toward Oaxaca, where it could impact as a Category 3, the National Water Commission (Conagua) warned in its most recent report; follow its trajectory LIVE here today, September 23, 2024.

The now hurricane John, which emerged from tropical depression 10-E, has maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour and gusts of 165 kilometers per hour; the cyclone is moving north at 6 kilometers per hour.

Currently, the center of Hurricane John is located 135 kilometers south of Punta Maldonado, in Guerrero, and 160 kilometers southwest of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.

There is a hurricane prevention zone from Punta Maldonado, Guerrero, to Bahías de Huatulco, Oaxaca, and a tropical storm prevention zone from the east of Bahías de Huatulco to Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and from the west of Punta Maldonado to Acapulco, Guerrero.

Hurricane John causes rain in Mexico

Hurricane John, which strengthened this afternoon after becoming a tropical storm this morning, will cause rain of varying intensities in at least nine states of the country. The entities affected by the rain are:

In addition to the rain, winds with gusts of 100 to 120 kilometers per hour and waves of 3 to 5 meters high are expected on the coasts of Oaxaca; as well as wind gusts of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour with waves of 1 to 3 meters high on the coasts of Guerrero and Chiapas; there is the possibility of the formation of waterspouts.

John to hit Oaxaca as a hurricane

In a new update, the National Water Commission warned that Hurricane John will quickly rise in category and reach level 3 before making landfall on Tuesday morning, September 24 near Puerto Escondido.

Authorities still do not know the exact point at which Hurricane John will hit Oaxaca.
