Oaxaca traditions arrive in Nezahualcóyotl

The color, joy and music of Oaxaca invaded the streets of Nezahualcóyotl, during the Vela Itsmeña, held with the purpose of rescuing and preserving the traditions of the entity among the community that has emigrated.

The Committee of Oaxacans living in the state of Mexico brought the festivity where the typical costumes gave prominence.

“Today I have my hair done with flowers with a very representative colorful bow, I am a married woman therefore my flowers go on the right side, I am dressed with filigree jewelry, my dress is made by a native of Juchitán, the colors and flowers represent the Oaxacan woman,” she explained.

Not to mention the giant puppets and tileches that are the symbol of the celebration of the working class and its ethnic origins, whose costumes are made of old rags and straw hats.

With the festivity of the Vela Itsmeña and its calenda, many families who emigrated several decades ago and the new generations returned to live their traditions.

They remembered and showed their dances that they hope their children and grandchildren know and enjoy to continue preserving their roots.

“I think that all Oaxacans bring a part of Oaxaca here, many times we leave our communities for a better future, but we never forget our roots, where we come from, we proudly like to say I am from Oaxaca, I wear a regional costume and I also love to show the crafts that our artisans make,” added Jaquelín Castillo, whose grandparents are of Oaxacan origin.
