World Car-Free Day celebrated in San Cristóbal!

In the framework of the World Day Without a Car, in the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas, environmentalists and organizations carried out walks and other bicycle rides in the streets, with the aim of not polluting the environment; the vehicles were left at home and on this day it was decided to go out without vehicles. Every September 22 they celebrate this Day Without a Car, established since 1994 and endorsed by various NGOs, European governments and the UN in 1999.

On this day, more than 30 people from various non-governmental organizations, environmentalists and the population of San Cristóbal itself, took to the streets to celebrate the Day Without a Car, with the aim of raising awareness among the population about the negative effects of the massive use of the automobile in cities, promoting the use of more sustainable means of transport such as bicycles, public transport and walking.

In this regard, Miguel Alberto Hidalgo, a member of the Rueda Libre in San Cristóbal, said in an interview that this day is World Car-Free Day, to celebrate this day, members of the ride decided to go out on bicycles in the streets of the city and leave the car at home, they will go around various streets, visit tourist sites, then return to the cathedral square to carry out different activities.

While Simeon, a German national, decided to go out on a bicycle in the city, “it is better to go out on a bicycle, without polluting the middle of the day,” he added that he has been living in San Cristóbal de las Casas for 14 years touring the city by bicycle, while the participants went around the streets of the city, around 40 people including men, women and girls on bicycles.
