The Canadian company Louis Garneau, which manufactures sportswear, left its 80 employees out on the street without paying their wages or severance, prompting them to stage a sit-in.
In response, the workers filed a complaint with the Center for Conciliation and Arbitration.
Luis Mena Montalvo, the factory manager located in the Industrial City, southwest of the Yucatecan capital, informed them that the company had declared bankruptcy.
He even told them that he too was left without a job and was not paid his fortnightly salary or given any severance.
The situation became complicated because the maquiladora is the only company in the entire Mexican Republic, and the headquarters is in Quebec, Canada.
Among the unemployed are housewives, two pregnant women, and even single mothers who did not receive a single peso of their salary.
The affected people asked the competent authorities to expedite their complaint to finalize the employment relationship and seek other jobs.
“It is a total injustice; there are machines worth thousands of pesos that remain as collateral until someone takes responsibility,” they stated.
The dismissed staff remains on guard at the factory with a permanent sit-in, awaiting a response and to prevent the removal of the maquiladora’s assets.
