The body of a person was lifted by personnel from the Attorney General’s Office (FGJ) of Puebla on a stretch of the Mexico-Puebla highway; on his chest, the victim had a cardboard with a narco message nailed to him.

The events were recorded during the early hours of this Friday, September 27, when motorists circulating in the area of the municipality of Xoxtla reported to the authorities the presence of a lifeless person abandoned on the asphalt.

Upon the arrival of the authorities, they noticed that the victim no longer showed vital signs and had a cardboard nailed to his chest with an ice pick. In the first report it was indicated that it was a man between 35 and 40 years old who was lying lifeless at kilometer 107 of the highway in the direction of Mexico City.

“This happened to me for making bribes of 4 million that were not yours and you stole them” (SIC).

After exchanging information with agencies in Puebla and Tlaxcala, it was revealed that the victim responded to the name of Roberto Pérez de la Rosa, a businessman from Veracruz who was reported missing.

According to his search file released by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Missing and Unlocated Persons, Roberto (44 years old) disappeared on Thursday, September 26 when he was in the municipality of Chiautempan, Tlaxcala.

Local media reported that the victim was a businessman who came from Xalapa to Tlaxcala more than 20 years ago. His disappearance – they said – occurred during the night of Thursday, when he left a restaurant on Gran Avenida Street and was approached by armed men: they would have put him in a gray Honda CRV truck and fled the scene.

More than 500 homicides in Puebla

Between January and August 2024, 1,175 investigation files have been opened for homicides committed in Puebla, of that number, 563 have been classified as intentional: 334 committed with firearms.

On average, two people are murdered every day in Puebla, despite these figures, the state government boasts a 2.4 percent reduction in this type of crime compared to the same period last year.

Despite the reduction in homicides, the perception of insecurity has remained at the same levels, especially due to the presence of bodies thrown into public roads in municipalities such as Quecholac and Puebla capital during the month of September.

Although the official figures for intentional homicides are not yet included in the report of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), the data collected by state prosecutors and federal agencies count – as of September 26 – 112 victims of intentional homicides in Puebla.

This number of victims is almost double the number of people killed in August (67) and marks one of the highest peaks of violence in the state. Since December 2020, the state had not reached these levels of violence; in that month, intentional homicides reached 110 cases.
