For years, the tourist destination of Los Cabos has faced numerous challenges arising from its accelerated growth. The Coordinating Council noted that, in the last 20 years, the municipality has grown by 244%. This means that, on average, every 7 or 8 years the city doubles in size.
This accelerated growth has slowed urban and infrastructure development, which has not been able to keep up, generating a series of problems that affect the quality of life. According to a study by the Municipal Institute of Urban Planning (Implan), to achieve an acceptable balance in the development of the municipality in the next 15 years, an approximate investment of 40 billion pesos is required, Julio Castillo Gómez, representative of the business sector in the region, informed the media.
“According to studies that we as a sector have been reviewing in intense work tables during this time of change that was from the day of the election to today, in fact we have discussed it with the elected mayor. To give us an idea of the great challenge we have in terms of growth, of what we have as a destination and as a city; it is that according to studies by IMPLAN and other technical organizations that consider that in order to achieve an acceptable balance in terms of urban development and urban infrastructure in the next 15 years, an approximate investment of 40 billion pesos would have to be made.”
Castillo Gómez stressed that, without an adequate Urban Development Plan (PDU) and a significant investment in infrastructure, it will be difficult for Los Cabos to achieve an orderly development. He warned that, if the necessary measures are not taken, planning problems will continue to affect the municipality.
“This will not be achieved if we do not take different actions. This will not be achieved if we do not propose different actions. We all as a society have to understand that due to poor planning, the poor mission of a destination in the last 10 years.”
The PDU is another of the major issues that, so far, is in the analysis and discussion phase, and is expected to be approved by the council this afternoon. With this tool, the destination is expected to stop growing in a disorderly manner in the future and avoid the infrastructure problems it currently faces. This situation directly impacts mobility in Los Cabos.
